This is oh so very true!  Between prayer as punishment in Catholic School, and hellfire and brimstone Baptist services I was well on my way.  What did it for me was really studying the Bible.  That book is an awesome atheist maker!  ~ Kim

So much this. My atheism is very much rooted in Christianity, specifically the Calvinistic flavored kind, which says that God knows everything that you’re ever going to do (yet you have free will). God creates things “for His glory” (what an egomaniac), yet will send many of them to Hell to be tortured and burned for all of eternity. This is the God who, in the Old Testament, commanded the Israelites to commit mass genocide (men, women, children, animals, and fucking trees) of people simply because they didn’t believe in their God. It only follows that some of those people were pregnant. Some pro-life God. This is the God that commanded Abraham to kill his son, and then stopped him at the last possible second. He was just testing him. This is the same God who strung His only son up like a side of beef. If that God exists, I will gladly spit in His face.
